Promoting Geoscience Research, Education & Success

My interests

My research spans a few different areas including the effective communication of science topics (particularly climate change), understanding how individuals (particularly experts/novices) interact with science information and improving geoscience education. I love doing anything outdoors, especially hiking, camping, biking and playing/coaching field hockey.

How I became a scientist

As a young girl I was always interested in how things worked. Throughout middle and high school I decided that I wanted to teach Earth Science to students because I loved being outside and I had a passion for educating. During my years as an undergraduate I had the opportunity to conduct research and realized that I also enjoyed the continual learning aspect of research. This sparked my interest in academia and is the reason that I am currently working towards my PhD! Science continues to fascinate me because it affects our everyday lives and continues to change and evolve. We continually discover more about our Earth that has previously been unknown to us – it doesn’t get much cooler than that!

How my work benefits society

Due to the fact that science is all around us and affecting our everyday lives, it is important for everyone to understand how and why scientific phenomenon take place and how it affects us. My work aims to educate citizens and improve communication of science topics in order to make more informed decisions. For example, climate change is a topic discussed among scientists, the public and policy makers. It is important that all parties not only know the science but can understand and interpret science behind climate change in order to make decisions. Effective communication of science to its audience is the key to making this happen.
